About Society

The Indian History and Culture Society, now known as ‘The History and Culture Society’ was founded in 1977 by Dr. S.P. Gupta and Dr. D. Devahuti in National Museum, New Delhi to provide a continuous forum and common platform to historians and scholars to express and exchange their views and thoughts freely and fearlessly. There is a need for interchanging of ideas on several important issues related to history for which it is hoped the Society provides an opportunity through workshops, seminars, memorials and special lectures and publications of an annual journal called ‘History Today’ and other periodicals on important events in history. History Today, Vol. - I was edited by Dr. Surjit Kaur Jolly and subsequently, in due course it was edited by Dr. Vandana Kaushik, Ms. S. Radhakrishnan and Prof. D.P. Tewari. The essential matter of history is not only what happened but how people interrupted it in different periods and its relevance for the contemporary scholars. Prime Minister Morarji Desai accompanied by eminent scholars had inaugurated the conference at National Museum, New Delhi in 1977.
